Yellow-bellied marmots (Marmota flaviventris) and golden-mantled ground squirrels (Callospermophilus lateralis) have complex social structures and communication systems.
Not only are these guys cute--they're pretty darned smart. I've been amazed at the cleverness of squirrels to outsmart our squirrel-proof bird feeders for years!
They are! I used to hate being outsmarted by these 'dumb' animals! Yet I do miss the challenge
So far our local ground squirrels haven't figured out how to climb. I hope it stays that way
